While I am not a big fan of fantasy, or animated fantasy, I readily admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed these How to Train Your Dragon films a great deal. The third one is no exception. I am a sucker for cute, cuddly anthropomorphic animals (even dragons) that can show us flawed humans how to properly behave and love one another.

Dean DeBlois’ film, which is the final chapter of this trilogy, offers Toothless a mate, while putting everyone at risk from a dragon slayer determined to kill the two Night Fury dragons that have eluded him. The entire clan bands together to save the dragons, and themselves, and find a way to coexist.

This film is more serious than the previous two, but it pays off because we are so invested in the characters and their unique predicament. Hiccup matures into a leader and his selfless deeds inspire the others to do what is necessary to preserve their special world. It is a highly satisfying narrative that crams a lot of content and emotion into its 104 minutes; yet it is not as fun or joyful as its predecessors.

The Hidden World is a good film with several story aspects that can be seen as commentary on our world today. Its seriousness is well founded, yet that very trait lessens its effectiveness as popular entertainment. Its story has overwhelmed its appeal. However, even as heavy drama this premise still works and finally arrives at an appropriate happy-ish ending. I’m glad I saw them all. ☆ ☆ ☆. 11 June 2019.
